Over the years, the department was headed by such renowned economists as Khizhinsky A.K., Demushkina L.O., Ismailova R.A., Galiyeva A.Kh., Toksanova A.N., Baktymbet A.S., Mukhamedzhanova A.A., who made a great contribution to building the department's teaching staff and organizing its academic, methodological, and research work.

Since August 2024, the department has been headed by  Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor Zambinova Gulmira Kairbayevna.

The staff contributes to the successful functioning of educational programs in the areas of student training in accordance with the priorities of the University, the faculty, and the department. The teaching staff of the department consists of 21 people with extensive experience in scientific and teaching activities, including: 2 Doctors of Economic Sciences, 5 PhD doctors, 7 Candidates of Economic Sciences, and 7 master's degree holders. Of these, 2 teachers have twice been awarded the title "Best University Teacher" (Galiyeva A.Kh., Ukubasova G.S.).

Graduates of the department work in government bodies, ministries and agencies, national and private companies, and banking institutions, and engage in business. The department's teachers conduct active educational and methodological work, applying innovative teaching methods, carry out academic work, as well as perform scientific work, take part in scientific and practical conferences both domestic and foreign, publish scientific articles in journals recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in ranked journals from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, and participate in scientific projects, programs, and expert reviews in relevant fields funded by ministries and other government bodies, international foundations and organizations.

Over the past 3 years, the main employers of bachelors of business and management, masters of economic sciences, and masters of business and management in the "Economics" educational program have been government organizations, commercial entities, financial and social institutions, and manufacturing enterprises.

Recently, when recruiting personnel for managerial positions, increasing attention has been paid to holding a master's degree, which in the civil service system is included in "Corps A", as confirmed by the high demand for Esil University master's graduates under the educational programs 7M04101, 7M04102 - Economics.

In order to strengthen the interaction between science, practice, and industry, in September 2013 the Department of Economics established a joint educational and research laboratory, "Public-Private Partnership in the Sphere of Higher Professional Education," based at Esil University and the Joint-Stock Company "Kazakhstan Public-Private Partnership Center."

Considering the importance of graduate employment, the Department of Economics (jointly with JSC "Kazakhstan PPP Center") was the first in the educational services market to develop the "Public-Private Partnership" track.

For the high-quality training of students with a view to their further employment along the aforementioned trajectory, the department creates the most favorable conditions: a room is equipped as a Laboratory, methodological seminars on PPP issues are held with the participation of all interested stakeholders, including employers. In addition, the department has an agreement with JSC "Economic Research Institute", where students undergo industrial practice, and joint round tables and online video conferences are held. Master's graduates of this educational trajectory mainly hold leadership positions in committees, administrations, and departments.

The PhD doctoral educational program is aimed at training scientific and teaching personnel and highly qualified specialists who are competitive in both the domestic and global labor markets, with the award of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

Since 2017, multilingual postgraduate education has been launched in the educational programs of master's and doctoral studies.

As part of the department's week dedicated to Economist's Day, a competition of student research projects and wall newspapers, as well as a methodological seminar with the participation of leading scholars and practitioners, is held annually.

An important aspect of the activities of the faculty and departments is the development of a system of interaction between the university and its graduates. The university maintains contact with many graduates, tracking their career growth and recording this information through the university's Alumni Associations.
