Esil University held a tutor hour on the topic "Stalking — Boundaries, Safety, and Responsibility." The meeting was conducted by first-year tutor and senior lecturer of the Department of Social Work and Tourism, Zhakupova Gulmira, for students of group B-SW 25/1 K.
The primary objective of the event was to develop in students an understanding of the nature of stalking, the ability to recognise its forms, knowledge of the legal consequences and means of protection, as well as to cultivate skills of safe behaviour.
During the tutorial hour, the concept of stalking and its principal forms, including online stalking (cyberstalking), were examined in detail. Participants discussed the causes of harassment, issues of legal liability, and the algorithm of actions to be taken when encountering such a situation. Special attention was given to the distinction between expressions of interest and obsessive pursuit.
Students arrived at an important realisation: "persistence" is not always a manifestation of affection and may develop into a form of psychological violence. They learned to recognise warning signs — intrusiveness, ignoring refusal, attempts at control, and digital surveillance. This directly contributes to enhancing personal safety and establishing healthy boundaries in communication.
Following the meeting, participants noted that they had gained a better understanding of the importance of personal boundaries and recognised that refusal is a norm that must be respected. The discussion contributed to the formation of a trusting atmosphere: students found it easier to speak about concerning situations and understood that seeking help is both appropriate and safe.
The advisory hour enabled students to acquire knowledge on risk prevention, self-protection tools, and an understanding of the legal consequences of stalking. Participants emphasized that pressure, "jokes," fake accounts, and intrusive behaviour are not harmless actions. The principal lesson students took away from the meeting is that their safety is paramount and that respect for boundaries is the foundation of healthy and safe communication.
